The leaves and pods or fruit are used medicinally. The active ingredients in senna are called sennosides. The ingredient molecule is converted by microorganisms in the colon to another substance, rhein anthrone, which has the beneficial effect of stimulating colonic activity, speeding up bowel movements and improving digestion. The laxative effect of sennosides and its active metabolite rhein anthrone are thought to inhibit the absorption of water and electrolytes in the large intestine, thereby increasing the volume and pressure of intestinal contents. It will stimulate a propulsive tightening movement of the colon. For this reason, sennosides are used in the preparation of enemas or suppositories, as well as in stool softeners or fiber laxatives.
