African Ghana Seed belongs to the shrubs of Fabaceae, Capeliaceae, and Ghana Seed. It originally grows in West African countries such as Ghana, Ivory Coast, Côte d'Ivoire and Togo. Griffonia seeds have a long history of folk medicinal use in West Africa. Its leaves and leaf juice can be used to treat trauma and diseases related to bladder and kidney respectively; in addition, garrison seeds can also be used to treat diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach pain. In recent years, studies have found that the main active ingredient of Griffonia seed extract is 5-hydroxytryptophan. 5-HTP is an amino acid substance and a precursor of the inhibitory neurotransmitter 5-hydroxytryptamine, which can increase the concentration of 5-HT in the brain, inhibit depression, promote melatonin synthesis, and improve sleep quality. However, 5-HTP is currently only found in significant amounts in Griffonia seeds. In view of the good activity of 5-HTP, in recent years, 5-HTP has been sold as a dietary supplement in the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada; the demand for 5-HTP is also increasing. Due to the limited seed resources in Ghana, Africa, coupled with a large amount of collection and increasing logistics costs, the production cost of 5-HTP remains high. In order to make better sustainable use of this plant germplasm resource, it has also been introduced and planted in tropical and subtropical regions of China.
