Horsetail is the whole herb of the genus Schizonephora of the family Schizonephora, which belongs to small and medium-sized ferns. Rhizomes blackish brown, up to 35 cm tall, with blunt tips and elongated stalks at maturity. It is mainly grown in Northeast China, Shaanxi, Xinjiang, Shandong, Jiangsu, Anhui, Jiangxi, Hubei, Hunan, Sichuan, Guizhou and Xizang. It also grows in Japan, the Himalayas, Russia, Europe and North America. It is born in moist grassland, ditches, sandy land, cultivated land, hillside and meadow at an altitude of 0-3700 meters. Horsetail contains vitex saponins, xyloside, isoquercitrin, luteolin, silicic acid, silicone, fat, β-sitosterol, canopine, dimethyl sulfone and a variety of amino acids.
